Bio(background notes:) Abel is a biologically engineered super-human who was created to head the colonization of Mars when Earth became overpopulated. Though he is 977 years old, his appearance is that of a normal human male in his thirties. He is tall, has fair skin, long silver hair always worn in a ponytail held by a black ribbon, blue eyes, and wears wire-rimmed glasses.
When the colonists reached Mars, they found two forms of life, both a species of nanomachine that bonded with the human beings, changing them. The Crusnik nanomachines were predators of the Bacillus nanomachines, and killed all of the humans who incorporated them except for the four bio-engineered humans who had accompanied the mission. Seeing a bonding with the Crusnik nanomachines at 100% drive his twin brother Cain mad, Abel bonded with the nanomachines in a way that allowed him to control the level of them in his system, leaving him sane and able to retain his humanity.
The altered colonists decided to return to Earth and wage war against the weaker Terrans for control of the planet, instigating Armageddon. Abel chose to fight alongside the Methuselahs and wipe out the human race that had created him as a tool for their use. However, during the war, some life-altering events occurred which left Cain in Rome, crying for 900 years as the war raged and the Methuselahs began to win. At the end of that time, an individual human cry for help prompted him to join the Terran side in memory of his beloved. The little girl he saved was Caterina Sforza, who would grow up to become one of the two most powerful Cardinals in the Vatican. To fight the vampires, she created a special forces division of the Vatican called AX which Abel joined, working for the Vatican to aid the Terrans.
This series falls into the Science Fiction genre, so magic is rare. Most everything is explained scientifically, including the existence of vampires, which are created from Martian nanomachines melding with normal human beings from Earth. The result is nearly the same as classical vampires of myth. They turn to dust in U-V radiation, drink blood (though there is a chemical substitute most prefer), live for centuries if not killed and do not age. The nanomachines repair any damage done to their bodies so long as their hearts remain intact. They are allergic to silver, which breaks down the nanomachines’ abilities to regenerate their bodies. If not removed, silver can kill them. The nanomachines also allow Methuselah to create blades from their skin which are different for each vampire. Most can only grow a single blade, more powerful Methuselah can grow more. Many of these blades resemble insect or arachnid legs.
In the world of Trinity Blood, there are also werewolves and other bio-engineered freaks of nature. Most of them are humans with special powers from experiments before Armageddon. But everything is science-based, from the space ships and satellites left over from before the war to the sonic spears used by the Inquisitors. Most of the human race, with the exception of the country of Albion which has preserved many of the ancient technologies, are not very well-versed with pre-Armageddon technology, most of which was destroyed in the war. The weapons of mass destruction left are controlled and parceled out in emergency as force is needed by the Department of Inquisition in the Vatican . Once they are used, they are lost because the technology that created them has been lost. Only a few geniuses survive who can comprehend and engineer similar feats of technology and all of them were specially educated at London University in Albion or have been alive since before the war, like the three remaining Crusnik, Abel, Cain, and Seth.
